Distracted driving is dangerous driving. However, many people fail to realize
they participate in such activities on a day-to-day basis. When most people
think of distracted driving, they imagine a person who is texting or talking
on the phone while driving, eating while driving, enjoying a coffee while
driving, etc. But many people do not consider talking to a passenger a
dangerous act. Studies have proven otherwise.
The University of Michigan’s Transportation Research Institute determined that
talking to a passenger can be just as dangerous as talking on the phone. In fact, the study showed no distinct differences between individuals
talking on the phone and those conversing with passengers in regards to
how drivers stayed in the correct lanes or used proper steering.
To obtain accurate results, the Transportation Research Institute installed
cameras in 36 motorists’ vehicles to record vehicle movements and
driver behaviors. The video recordings proceeded for 4 weeks. Following
the four-week period, the team analyzed the clips to determine how individuals’’
driving skills were affected while the drivers participated in various
The study determined that many drivers engaged in secondary tasks. Roughly
15% of the clips displayed drivers who conversed with passengers. Another
5% talked on their cell phones.
Results showed there were no conspicuous changes between the two types
of drivers regarding the following behaviors:
- Erratic steering
- Lane position
- Speed fluctuation
- Use of the gas pedal
- Glance behavior such as checking mirrors and windows
This means that, for the most part, the drivers were equally distracted
behind the wheel. To stay safe, drivers must make driving the priority.
All drivers, no matter how busy or slow the traffic is, should be aware
of their surroundings, alert, and keep their eyes on the road.

Loud Music Could Significantly Impact Your Driving Abilities
Daily commutes to work become repetitive. In some cases, driving to and
from work can be annoying, depending on the amount a traffic you face.
To help make drives more enjoyable, many people will use their radio or
some other form of music device to play their favorite music. However,
loud music can be unsafe.
While loud music isn’t good for your ears, it is impedes your ability
to drive as well.
Persons who play loud music are:
- Cognitively distracted
- Unable to hear other drivers’ horns
- Unable to hear the sirens of emergency vehicles
- Unable to quickly react to emergencies
In 2001, Canadian Scientists at Newfoundland’s Memorial University
discovered the highly deceptive danger of drivers who choose to listen
to loud music while behind the wheel. After an intense study and investigation,
this group of individuals determined that the reaction time increases
almost 20% when a person listens to music at a volume of 95 decibels or
higher. The excess in delayed reaction times creates an extreme danger
for motorists driving at any speeds.
In addition, the study proved that motorists were more likely to participate
in bad driving habits such as the following.
- Dangerous lane changing
- Passing without checking blind-spots
- Holding the wheel with one hand
- And more
The results of this study did not suggest that drivers should stop listening
to music altogether. Rather, drivers should listen to music at a low to
moderate volume while behind the wheel. It may be the difference between
getting to work safely and injuring another person or yourself.
