Traveling the Sunday After Thanksgiving Weekend? Here's the Safest Times to Drive

Posted By Montee Law Firm, P.C. || 13-Nov-2015

On Thanksgiving weekend, many people are traveling to and from the homes of family members and friends. Of course, due to the numerous drivers on the road, heavy traffic congests roads during the holiday weekend. In addition, there is a larger risk of car accidents due to the high volume of drivers occupying the roads. However, some times are better to travel than others.

Waze, the world’s largest community-based traffic and navigation app, warns drivers to beware of the Sunday following Thanksgiving. In 2014, Waze saw an increase of 323% of reported jams, 112% increase in reported accidents, 79.8% increase in reported hazards, and 100.2% in reported police reports.

According to reports made by Waze users across the nation, Waze was able to calculate the times that are best and worst in regards to driving conditions the days before and after Thanksgiving. Below are the findings:

Tuesday

  • Peak traffic house are from 4-8pm.
  • More Waze users (most likely means more drivers on the road) after 1pm.

Wednesday

  • Peak traffic between the hours of 2-7pm
  • More Waze users starting at 11am through the end of the day
  • Less Waze users (most likely means less drivers on the road) in the morning
  • 62.9% increase in car accident notifications
  • 38.6% increase in police notifications
  • 31.3% increase in hazard notifications

Thursday

  • Similar traffic and user activity as a weekend day

Friday

  • Similar traffic and user activity as a weekend day

Saturday

  • Small increase in Waze user activity

Sunday

  • Peak traffic from 1-6pm
  • Increase in user activity during the entire day

No matter what days and time you plan to travel, it is important that you practice safe driving to ensure you, your family, and other drivers arrive to their destinations in a safe manner. After all, what is a better way to begin and end Thanksgiving than getting to each destination safely?
